Kyrgyzstan Pursues $193 Million Investment in Water Infrastructure

Post by : Shakul

Kyrgyzstan is advancing its efforts to secure substantial international investment in its water sector following essential discussions involving high-ranking officials and representatives from the World Bank and the International Development Association.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, Erlist Akunbekov, led discussions that centered on optimizing water management and enhancing irrigation infrastructure nationwide.

During the meeting, officials evaluated the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program, which aims to mobilize approximately 193 million US dollars for Kyrgyzstan. This initiative is poised to modernize irrigation systems, enhance water resource management, and secure the country's food supply.

Authorities indicated that this investment initiative is crucial for revamping aging irrigation infrastructure, thereby boosting agricultural productivity throughout various regions. Effective water management remains a key government priority in light of escalating agricultural and environmental issues.

The talks also touched on the preparation of technical and design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in the At-Bashy District of Naryn Region as well as the Chon Talas Canal in the Talas Region.

Officials confirmed that a grant of 650 thousand US dollars will be allocated for advancing the design of these canal projects, which is anticipated to accelerate planning and development efforts for future infrastructure enhancements.

At the end of the discussions, Erlist Akunbekov, along with World Bank representatives, signed official documents that outline the agreements and future collaboration steps within the water sector.

Government representatives noted that their partnership with international financial entities reflects Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to enhancing water security, modernizing agriculture, and attracting sustainable foreign investments in key infrastructure projects.
