The Kremlin has said that United States President Donald Trump would go down in world history if America managed to take control of Greenland. The comment came as global attention continues to focus on Trump’s repeated statements that he wants the vast Arctic island to become part of the United States.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was hard to disagree with experts who believe such a move would be historic. He made it clear that Russia was not judging whether the idea was right or wrong. Instead, he said it would simply be a major event with global importance.
Trump has openly stated several times that he wants ownership of Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. He has argued that Greenland is important for America’s security and has warned that if the United States does not take control, other major powers like Russia or China could step in.
When asked about Trump’s claims of a possible Russian threat to Greenland, Peskov said there had been a lot of worrying information in recent days. However, he added that the Kremlin would not comment on any alleged Russian plans regarding the island.
Peskov said the key point was not whether such an action would follow international law or whether it would be seen as positive or negative. According to him, many international experts believe that if Trump succeeded in bringing Greenland under US control, it would place him firmly in both American and world history.
Denmark and Greenland have strongly rejected Trump’s statements. Leaders from both have made it clear that Greenland is not for sale and that its people do not want to become part of the United States. Greenland has its own government and a strong sense of identity, even though Denmark still handles defense and foreign affairs.
Russia’s foreign ministry has also spoken on the issue. Last week, it said Western countries should stop claiming that Russia or China threaten Greenland. Moscow said the situation shows what it calls double standards by Western powers, which often speak about rules and morality while ignoring them when it suits their interests.
The debate over Greenland highlights growing competition among major powers in the Arctic region. As climate change opens new sea routes and access to natural resources, the strategic value of the area has increased. This has turned Greenland into a focal point of global politics, even as its leaders insist that their future should be decided by their own people.
