Kerala Welcomes Delayed Southwest Monsoon Amid Heavy Rainfall Alerts

Post by : Shakul

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially confirmed the onset of the southwest monsoon in Kerala, heralding the start of India’s most essential rainy season. This year, the monsoon's arrival on June 4 came three days later than the usual onset date of June 1, and later than previously predicted by meteorologists.

As the monsoon arrived, extensive rainfall has been recorded across various regions of Kerala, prompting the IMD to issue orange alerts for several districts. These alerts caution residents about anticipated intense rains and potential local disruptions.

Meteorological observations indicate that favorable atmospheric dynamics facilitated the monsoon’s movement into Kerala, as well as into Lakshadweep and parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, the Arabian Sea, and regions of the Bay of Bengal. Experts anticipate that the monsoon will continue its northward trajectory, bringing rain to further parts of the nation in the upcoming days.

Daily life in various areas has already been impacted by the heavy rains. In Idukki district, a multi-storey building that was under construction collapsed due to adverse weather, although there were no reports of injuries. Authorities remain vigilant in monitoring regions at risk as the rainfall intensifies.

The commencement of the monsoon is crucial for India’s agricultural sector, which relies heavily on seasonal rains for crop growth. Farmers, water management officials, and decision-makers closely observe monsoon developments as they directly affect food production, reservoir levels, and overall economic performance.

Other regions in the country are also under alert for adverse weather conditions. Thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and heavy rains are predicted in areas like Telangana and Arunachal Pradesh, while light rain in Delhi has led to cooler temperatures following a period of warm and humid weather.

Despite the delayed arrival, the IMD forecasts normal rainfall levels for the season in 2026. Residents in alert areas are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to take necessary safety measures as the monsoon season develops across India in the coming weeks.
