Karan Johar Discusses Virat Kohli's Absence from Koffee With Karan

Post by : Mina Rahman

Karan Johar, the acclaimed filmmaker and charismatic host of Koffee With Karan, has revealed that one major sports star is unlikely to ever grace his show — Virat Kohli.

During an engaging conversation with Sania Mirza, Karan was questioned about Kohli's non-appearance on his popular talk show. He candidly replied, “I have never asked Virat. And now, I am not reaching out to any cricketers following the fallout from Hardik (Pandya) and (KL) Rahul's episode.”

He explained that there are notable personalities he hasn’t invited due to concerns they might decline the invitation.

This comment stems from the notorious incident in 2019 when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul appeared on Koffee With Karan, facing significant backlash for their statements. Hardik's comments about women drew widespread condemnation, as he shared intimate tales from his life that many deemed inappropriate.

A particularly controversial remark suggested that he learned to “treat women” by observing “West Indian players and black culture,” which sparked outrage nationwide. The BCCI's Committee of Administrators demanded accountability from both athletes.

Following public outcry, Hardik issued a social media apology, acknowledging he had “gotten carried away” during the episode. Yet, this was insufficient to avert disciplinary measures. Both players were suspended temporarily by the BCCI, subsequently receiving fines of Rs 20 lakh each under Rule 41 due to misconduct.

Reflecting on the fallout, Karan had previously expressed feeling a sense of personal accountability for the controversy. “I feel very responsible as it was my show and my platform. Their presence as guests made me responsible for the outcomes,” he admitted.

The distress from that episode left Karan grappling with sleepless nights as he pondered how to manage the backlash from the fallout.

Since then, Karan has remained cautious about inviting sports figures, particularly cricketers, onto Koffee With Karan. This incident not only transformed perceptions surrounding celebrity interviews but also altered how entertainment platforms navigate sensitive discussions in a scrutinizing social media landscape.

While fans dream of seeing Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma on the couch in the future, Karan's recent comments highlight a deliberate choice to avoid potential controversies, especially regarding cricket stars.
