Israel Demolishes UNRWA Buildings in East Jerusalem, Sparking International Law Dispute

Post by : Saif Nasser

Israeli forces have demolished several buildings inside the East Jerusalem compound of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, known as UNRWA. The action took place early Tuesday morning and has caused serious concern among international observers and humanitarian groups.

Bulldozers entered the compound under the protection of Israeli security forces. Large and small structures were torn down, including buildings that once served as offices and storage areas. UNRWA staff had worked at the site for many years before the agency was ordered to stop operating there in 2024.

UNRWA strongly condemned the demolition and said it was a clear violation of international law. According to the agency, Israeli forces arrived around 7 a.m., removed security guards, and allowed heavy machinery to begin the destruction. UN officials said the compound is protected under United Nations privileges and should not have been touched.

Some former UNRWA employees stated that the demolished buildings had been used to store aid supplies meant for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. These supplies included items needed for daily life, such as food and medical materials. The loss of such facilities may affect future aid delivery in the region.

Israel has defended its actions by saying that the compound does not have legal immunity. The Israeli foreign ministry stated that the seizure and demolition were carried out according to Israeli and international law. Israeli authorities also claimed that UNRWA failed to pay millions of shekels in property taxes, despite repeated warnings.

The Israeli government banned UNRWA from operating in the country in October 2024. Lawmakers also stopped officials from having any contact with the agency. Israel has accused some UNRWA staff members of having links to Hamas and of being involved in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which killed about 1,200 people. UNRWA has said it dismissed several staff members but added that Israel did not provide full proof for all allegations.

UNRWA insists that the East Jerusalem compound remains United Nations property and that it does not owe any unpaid taxes. The agency also points out that East Jerusalem is considered occupied territory by the United Nations and most countries, even though Israel views the entire city as part of its state.

UNRWA continues to operate in Gaza, the West Bank, and other parts of the Middle East. It provides education, healthcare, shelter, and social support to millions of Palestinian refugees. The demolition of its buildings in East Jerusalem adds another layer of tension to an already fragile situation and raises fresh questions about respect for international institutions during times of conflict.
