Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is poised to head to Pakistan this weekend for critical discussions aimed at rejuvenating the stalled dialogue between Iran and the United States, as reported by two officials in Pakistan.
These officials indicated that Araghchi could arrive as soon as Friday, accompanied by a small delegation from his government. However, there has been no official confirmation from Iran regarding this visit.
Pakistan is diligently working to reignite diplomatic efforts that were anticipated earlier in the week but ultimately did not materialize. Islamabad is committed to reducing tensions and reinstating negotiations between Iran and the US to resolve the prevailing conflict that has led to severe casualties and destabilization throughout the Middle East.
The ongoing war has resulted in thousands of fatalities, disrupted global energy supplies, and heightened pressures on oil markets internationally.
In concurrent developments, the White House revealed that President Trump has extended the Jones Act waiver for an additional 90 days. This decision facilitates the transportation of oil and gas by non-American vessels during the current crisis, aimed at stabilizing global energy supplies after tensions in the Strait of Hormuz jeopardized shipping routes.
Previously, the US had granted a 60-day waiver, viewed as beneficial in curbing surging fuel prices and enhancing oil transport efficiency.
A White House spokesperson noted that newly updated information indicated a faster-than-expected increase in oil supply to US ports.
Following this announcement, Brent crude oil prices decreased to around $104 per barrel, having briefly exceeded $107. The prices have escalated substantially since the onset of conflict earlier this year.
Pakistan has assumed a pivotal mediating role, with Araghchi recently engaging in discussions with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Their talks centered on the ceasefire conditions and initiatives to recommence US-Iran engagement.
According to the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan, both parties deliberated on regional issues and underscored the necessity for ongoing dialogue to foster peace and stability.
Simultaneously, tensions remain elevated in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping lane for oil and gas. Reports indicate that Iran has targeted multiple vessels, while US forces continue to uphold a significant military presence in the area.
Currently, the United States has three aircraft carriers deployed in the region: the USS George H.W. Bush, USS Abraham Lincoln, and USS Gerald R. Ford—marking the first instance since 2003 where three US carrier groups operate simultaneously in this strategic area.
The conflict has led to grave casualties, with reports of over 3,300 deaths in Iran, more than 2,200 in Lebanon, and 23 in Israel, along with additional fatalities in Gulf countries, affecting both military personnel and civilians as hostilities persist on multiple fronts.
Current diplomatic endeavors aim to avert further escalation and encourage all parties to return to the negotiation table.
