Fans were left disappointed as rain disrupted India’s final T20 match against Australia at the Gabba, leading to its abandonment. Despite this, the visitors triumphed in the series 3-1, establishing their prowess ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Sent in to bat first, India’s openers, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, quickly put together a solid partnership, reaching 52 without loss in less than five overs before lightning interrupted play. Gill showcased impressive form, hitting six fours on his way to an unbeaten 29, while Abhishek stayed solid with 23 not out, despite two missed catches from Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis.
Amid a packed crowd’s anticipation, the weather proved unyielding, leading to the game being called off over two hours later.
The series had its ups and downs as the first encounter in Canberra was also washed out. Australia managed to win the second match in Melbourne by four wickets, largely thanks to Josh Hazlewood’s remarkable performance. However, with Hazlewood and other key players withdrawn for the Ashes, India rebounded impressively, taking the third T20 in Hobart by five wickets and the fourth on the Gold Coast by 48 runs.
Abhishek Sharma earned the title of Player of the Series after scoring 163 runs at an average of 40.75. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav remarked, “The way everybody contributed throughout the series and our ability to come back after being one down shows tremendous character. It was a collective team achievement.”
Mitch Marsh, the Australian captain, acknowledged the spirited competition, noting, “It was a fiercely contested series; India clinched the key matches, so congratulations to them.”
This victory positions India, the world’s leading T20 team, with bolstered confidence and depth as they approach the T20 World Cup defense on home turf next year.
