Sharjah has once again demonstrated its reputation as a cultural cornerstone in the Arab world with the official inauguration of the 22nd Sharjah Festival of Arabic Poetry by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi this Monday evening at the Cultural Palace.
The festival, spanning seven days, welcomes more than 80 poets, critics, and media figures hailing from various parts of the Arab world, alongside participants from several African nations. The opening ceremony emphasized Sharjah's enduring dedication to safeguarding the Arabic language, poetry, and literary tradition.
A recorded segment titled “Years of Poetry” was showcased during the event, commemorating a decade of poetry houses built throughout the Arab world, all under the patronage of the Ruler of Sharjah. These establishments have transformed into vital cultural hubs that nurture poetic talent, foster literary conversations, and strengthen the bonds among poets and critics.
The event also celebrated notable literary achievements, with Dr Ahmed Balboula being honored with the Sharjah Prize for Arabic Poetry, while the Sharjah Prize for Poetry Criticism recognized Mahrez Ben Mohsen Rachdi of Tunisia (first place), Al Mahdi Al Araj of Morocco (second), and Al Hassan Mohamed Mahmoud of Mauritania (third).
Central to the evening were poetry recitals by Emirati poet Najat Al Dhaheri, Egyptian poet Dr Ahmed Balboula, and Iraqi poet Hazbar Mahmoud, who dazzled attendees with a rich array of poetic expressions and styles.
Throughout the festival's duration, attendees can engage in poetry readings, cultural gatherings, and interactive discussions aimed at fostering open communication among participants. A special book-signing area will enable fans to interact directly with poets, while works from the 12 laureates of the Golden Rhyme Award—featured in upcoming 2025 magazine editions—will also be showcased.
The launch was honored by senior officials, including Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, as well as key figures from Sharjah’s cultural and administrative sectors, poets, critics, and poetry aficionados, all united to celebrate the vibrant heritage of Arabic poetry.
