Impeachment Complaint Filed Against Philippine President Marcos Over Trust and Governance Claims

Post by : Saif Nasser

A new political storm has emerged in the Philippines after a lawyer filed an impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The complaint accuses the president of betraying public trust and failing to properly lead the country on several major issues.

The complaint was filed on Monday by lawyer Andre De Jesus. One of the main accusations is that President Marcos allowed his predecessor, former President Rodrigo Duterte, to be arrested and sent to The Hague to face trial at the International Criminal Court. Duterte is accused of crimes linked to thousands of deaths during his controversial war on drugs. The lawyer described Duterte’s arrest as a “kidnapping,” repeating claims made by Duterte’s family and supporters.

Rodrigo Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, was arrested in March and taken to the ICC. The court is investigating alleged human rights abuses during his time in office. The case has divided public opinion in the Philippines, with some calling it justice and others calling it foreign interference.

The impeachment complaint goes beyond the Duterte issue. It also accuses President Marcos of violating the Constitution through alleged budget problems. The complaint claims the president failed to act against corruption linked to flood control projects, which are meant to protect communities from disasters. These accusations have raised concerns about how public money is being used.

Another serious claim in the complaint is that President Marcos did not clearly respond to allegations of drug use. According to the lawyer, these unanswered questions have created doubts about the president’s fitness to govern. De Jesus said the impeachment process would allow the Filipino people to openly examine these issues.

President Marcos’ office responded by saying it respects the democratic process. In an official statement, the presidential communications office said it trusts Congress to handle the matter fairly and according to the law. The statement also said the president will continue to govern and ensure that public services are not disrupted while the process unfolds.

This development comes nearly a year after the House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte, who is President Marcos’ estranged political ally and the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte. That impeachment case was later dismissed by the Supreme Court for breaking the Constitution’s one-year rule on impeachment filings.

Although the current House of Representatives is no longer led by Marcos’ cousin, Martin Romualdez, it is still largely controlled by lawmakers who support the president. This has led many observers to question whether the impeachment complaint will move forward or gain enough support to succeed.

President Marcos was elected in 2022 and is serving a single six-year term. Under the Constitution, he cannot run for re-election in 2028. With about two years left in office, his leadership is now under renewed scrutiny. Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte is widely seen as a strong candidate for the next presidential election.

The impeachment complaint highlights deep political divisions in the Philippines. Whether or not it advances in Congress, it has already sparked debate about leadership, accountability, and the rule of law in the country.
