Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the singer renowned for her work with the Grateful Dead in the 1970s and a sought-after session vocalist in the 1960s, died on November 2 at a hospice in Nashville. She was 78.
Her representative, Dennis McNally, confirmed she succumbed after a long battle with cancer. McNally described her as a "sweet and warmly beautiful spirit," and shared a parting line from Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter: "May the four winds blow her safely home."
Early career and session work
Born Donna Jean Thatcher in Florence, Alabama, she began singing in Muscle Shoals, contributing to many seminal soul sessions. Her vocals appear on tracks such as Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds," and she worked with artists including Duane Allman, Cher and Neil Diamond during a prolific era of American recording.
Years with the Grateful Dead
She joined the Grateful Dead in 1971 alongside then-husband and keyboardist Keith Godchaux, playing a significant role on records like Europe '72 and Terrapin Station. The couple left the band in 1979 to form the Heart of Gold Band, a project shortened by Keith Godchaux's death in 1980.
Later work and legacy
Following her time with the Dead, Godchaux remained active in music, leading her own groups and staying influential within the jam and rock communities. Her final studio album, Back Around (2014), made with Jeff Mattson, was framed by her as a spiritual return to her roots. Colleagues and fans around the world have paid tribute to a distinctive voice that connected rock and soul.
