Audiences who remember the 1999 adventure are getting a long-awaited reunion: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the original screen duo from The Mummy, are confirmed to return for The Mummy 4. The new instalment will be handled by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking pair behind Ready or Not (2019) and the 2022 Scream revival.
The 1999 The Mummy followed Fraser’s swashbuckling treasure hunter in 1930s Egypt, who partners with Weisz’s archaeologist to thwart a vengeful, supernatural Egyptian priest. The movie was a major box-office hit that helped cement both actors’ profiles. They reunited for The Mummy Returns (2001); Weisz was not part of the franchise’s third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
Universal later attempted a franchise reboot with Tom Cruise in 2017, but that effort failed to jumpstart the studio’s planned Dark Universe and did not perform as expected commercially.
Fraser’s career has enjoyed a notable comeback in recent years, capped by an Oscar win for The Whale (2022) and roles in films such as No Sudden Move (2021), Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Brothers. He also appeared in the Japanese production Rental Family, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Weisz has maintained a distinguished trajectory since The Mummy, winning an Academy Award for The Constant Gardener and a BAFTA for The Favourite. Her more recent credits include Melina Vostokoff in Marvel’s Black Widow and the lead in Amazon Prime Video’s Dead Ringers (2023).
The confirmation of Fraser and Weisz’s return suggests The Mummy 4 will reunite the franchise’s original energy and spirit for audiences more than two decades after the first film.
