The Florida Gators emerged victorious with a convincing 82-68 win against the Miami Hurricanes during the Jacksonville Hoops Showdown held in Jacksonville, Florida. The anticipated encounter between these two competitive teams saw Florida execute an impressive display of offense and defense, securing Miami's first loss of the season. With this win, Florida improved their record to 3-1, while Miami's record now stands at 3-1 following the defeat.
Key to Florida’s success was Alex Condon, who scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out with just over five minutes remaining in the second half. His effective shooting—making 8 of his 12 attempts, including two three-pointers—helped Florida seize key moments in the game, providing essential inside presence that challenged Miami's defense.
Thomas Haugh had a standout performance as well, finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, contributing crucial momentum through his three-point shooting. Rueben Chinyelu made significant contributions, delivering a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, even though he fouled out with six minutes to go. Urban Klavzar added 15 points, efficiently shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
On the Miami side, Malik Reneau stood out with 22 points and 11 rebounds before also fouling out in the second half. His efforts inside kept Miami competitive, especially during the first half, while Tru Washington added 16 points and Trey Donaldson contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Nonetheless, Miami struggled at the free-throw line, converting only 56 percent, which hindered their chances of staying competitive.
The Hurricanes began with strong momentum, highlighted by an initial basket from Washington. However, Florida quickly took control with a three-pointer from Condon, triggering a 9-0 scoring run, with Boogie Fland capping it off with a bank shot. Miami responded effectively by sinking five consecutive shots, including a three-pointer from Donaldson, momentarily taking a 13-12 lead.
As the first half progressed, both teams traded baskets. Florida regained the lead thanks to three free throws by Klavzar. Condon’s putback pushed Florida to a 26-21 lead with just six minutes remaining in the half. Although Miami attempted to rally, Haugh’s timely deep three-pointer extended Florida’s lead. The half concluded with Florida ahead 39-29, led by Condon’s impressive first-half tally of 15 points.
Miami entered the second half with vigor, launching a 7-0 run that minimized Florida’s lead to 44-41, providing the Hurricanes with the momentum for a comeback. Yet, Florida countered with improved ball movement and defense. Despite Chinyelu and Condon facing foul troubles early in the half, Florida continued to find the basket. Haugh’s three-point play helped the Gators build their lead to 67-50 with under eight minutes left.
Ultimately, Florida maintained their advantage as Miami struggled to keep pace, leveraging strategic play and effective teamwork to seal the win. The final score reflected Florida's balanced, powerful, and resolute performance throughout the match.
