Five Pakistani Soldiers and 25 Militants Killed in Border Clashes

Post by : Raina Nasser

A fresh outbreak of violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier left five Pakistani soldiers and 25 militants dead after intense exchanges. Pakistan's military said the attackers tried to cross from Afghanistan through the difficult terrain of Kurram and North Waziristan over Friday and Saturday, renewing international concern over security along the border.

The frontier, long a hotspot for armed incidents, saw one of its most severe confrontations in recent weeks. Pakistan’s military spokesman argued the infiltration attempts raise serious questions about Kabul’s ability or willingness to curb militant groups operating from Afghan soil, and Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban authorities to take action.

The Taliban have denied providing sanctuaries to militant groups and have accused Pakistan of breaching Afghan sovereignty with cross-border raids. Still, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif struck a guardedly hopeful note on Saturday, saying the ceasefire was still intact while warning that failure to reach agreement in the ongoing Istanbul talks could escalate into what he described as “open war.”

Diplomatic delegations meeting in Istanbul are under close observation from regional and global capitals. Their mandate is to preserve the week-old Doha-brokered truce that briefly halted the heaviest border fighting since the Taliban’s 2021 return to power. Previous rounds of violence involved heavy artillery and Pakistani airstrikes after Islamabad accused the Taliban of permitting cross-border attacks.

Pakistan’s military identified the recent assailants as members of what it called “Fitna al Khwarij,” a label applied to extremist outfits it alleges are supported by outside backers and motivated by radical ideology. Forces moved quickly to repel the incursion, officials said, thwarting a potentially larger breach and securing critical border positions.

The episode highlights deepening mistrust between Islamabad and Kabul: Pakistan presses for more robust counterterrorism measures while Afghanistan rejects what it terms interference in its internal affairs. Observers warn that a breakdown of the fragile ceasefire could plunge the region back into sustained violence and instability.

For now, Pakistan insists its troops are ready to defend the frontier and its citizens, even as it appeals to Afghan authorities to act against cross-border militancy before the delicate peace unravels. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as tensions along the border remain high.
