Abu Dhabi Enhances SEHHI Initiative for Healthier Work Environments

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has enhanced the SEHHI initiative to boost access to nutritious food options in workplaces throughout the emirate. This expansion introduces new technical guidelines designed to foster healthier nutrition habits among employees.

The focus is on weaving preventive health into the daily routine by improving environments where employees spend much of their time. The objective is to facilitate healthy choices in a way that requires minimal effort from individuals.

The updated workplace guidelines offer a straightforward framework for both public and private sector organizations. This helps employers translate their health commitments into actionable strategies that create atmospheres promoting healthy behaviors and food choices.

Key requirements include the display of calorie information at food service areas. Moreover, a minimum of 30% of menu items must adhere to SEHHI nutritional standards. The guidelines further specify the arrangement of meals, snacks, beverages, and vending machine items to enhance visibility and ease of access to healthier selections.

The framework precisely outlines roles and responsibilities for all parties, encompassing employers and food vendors. Steps include registration, appointing designated staff, approving food items, employee training, executing awareness programs, and consistently monitoring advancements and impact.

Dr. Rashed Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, underscored the significance of this initiative. He stated that workplaces significantly influence daily habits, and this programme aims to embed healthy choices into everyday life seamlessly.

These guidelines are applicable to all workplaces in Abu Dhabi that provide food and beverages, such as cafeterias, catering services, vending machines, kiosks, and coffee stations. Employers are encouraged to register and begin implementing this programme through official SEHHI channels.
