Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, has issued a stark warning that the NATO alliance could unravel if the United States were to forcibly seize Greenland. This statement follows provocative hints from President Trump regarding direct U.S. control over the Arctic territory.
According to Frederiksen, any military action against one NATO member by another would undermine the very foundation of the alliance, dismantling the collective security system established since World War II. As a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, Greenland is included in NATO obligations through Danish membership.
Recently, Trump has reignited his historical interest in Greenland, indicating that discussions on the topic are forthcoming. He asserts that Greenland is crucial for U.S. national security and has not dismissed military options to assert dominance over the island.
Tensions escalated after the U.S. appointed a special envoy favoring annexation, alongside the emergence of a controversial image on social media depicting Greenland in U.S. colors, hinting at possible American governance.
Responding to this, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen labeled such gestures disrespectful and a violation of Greenland’s political rights, while reassuring citizens that the island is not for sale and its future will be determined by its inhabitants, free from external coercion.
Strategically positioned between Europe and North America, Greenland is pivotal for missile defense and has vast mineral resources that are increasingly significant amid global competition to secure supply chains. The United States has raised alarms over expanding Russian and Chinese interests in the Arctic.
Despite the escalating tensions, Greenlandic leadership is working to alleviate public concerns, affirming that there is no imminent threat of a military takeover and that international law remains in their favor.
Both Denmark and Greenland stress that collaboration is the sole viable course of action, warning that any attempts at forcibly altering Greenland’s status would have serious implications for global stability and NATO's future.
