A top Ukrainian fighter pilot, known by the call sign “Juice,” died last year in a tragic training accident. Now, Ukraine’s air force commander is sharing more details about the incident and the risks pilots face every day while defending their country.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrii Pilshchykov, better known as “Juice,” died in August 2023 when two training jets crashed in central Ukraine. He was one of Ukraine’s most experienced pilots and had played a key role in helping his country prepare to fly F-16 fighter jets, which were expected to arrive from Western allies.

Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk recently spoke about Juice’s death, calling it a heavy loss not just for Ukraine’s military, but also for the country as a whole. He said the accident reminded everyone how dangerous military aviation is, especially during wartime.

Juice had trained in the United States and had become a well-known figure among Ukraine’s airmen. He had often spoken in interviews about Ukraine’s need for modern fighter jets like the F-16 to better defend against Russian missile and drone attacks.

Oleshchuk explained that Juice had been flying a MiG-29 jet and had completed his mission. He was preparing to land when the crash happened. Another MiG-29 pilot involved in the accident also died.

The air force chief said that Juice had done everything he could in the final seconds to avoid a crash. He managed to steer the plane away from residential areas, preventing what could have been a much bigger tragedy on the ground.

“Every day, we lose our best people,” Oleshchuk said, showing the emotional toll the war has taken on Ukraine’s air force. He described Juice as someone who inspired many young pilots and helped push for improvements in Ukraine’s air defense.

The crash happened during a time when Ukraine was still waiting for F-16 fighter jets promised by Western countries. These jets are expected to give Ukraine a better chance against Russia’s more advanced air power. Juice had been helping build the F-16 training program, sharing his experience and working closely with foreign partners.

His death came as a huge blow to that program. Still, Ukraine is continuing to move forward with the plan to bring F-16s into action, with pilots training abroad and preparations underway to maintain and operate the jets at home.

The air force commander said that although Juice is no longer with them, his contributions will not be forgotten. His work helped lay the foundation for a stronger and more modern air force in Ukraine.

The story of Juice shows not only the skill and bravery of Ukrainian pilots but also the risks they take every time they fly. As the war with Russia continues, Ukraine’s air force must keep fighting and training, even in the face of painful losses.
