Abu Dhabi Introduces Design Commission to Enhance Creative Economy

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan has spearheaded the establishment of the Design Commission Abu Dhabi (DCAD), a strategic entity dedicated to advancing the emirate's creative economy and fostering design-centered innovation.

This initiative signifies a pivotal moment in Abu Dhabi's ongoing efforts to integrate creativity, culture, and design into its plans for economic diversification and global cultural impact. DCAD aims to bolster innovation in a world increasingly driven by AI and future technologies.

A primary goal of DCAD is to transform Abu Dhabi into a key player in design intellectual property (IP), focusing on the development of UAE-produced materials and textiles while nurturing talent through international residencies, advanced training, and capacity-building programs tailored to industry demands.

In addition to enhancing Abu Dhabi's international creative influence, DCAD will facilitate high-impact cultural events and collaborations, solidifying the emirate's standing in sustainable luxury, cultural production, and innovative design.

In alignment with Abu Dhabi's larger economic and cultural ambitions, the Commission seeks to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive design ecosystem that celebrates Emirati creativity, supports emerging industries, and fosters long-term employment opportunities across various design fields.

The formation of DCAD also reinforces Abu Dhabi's goal to merge design, technology, and innovation in the next phase of its development by aligning creative sectors with economic policy, education, and partnerships.

The DCAD Board, chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, features Nadine Maalouf as Executive Vice Chairwoman and Rana Kuzayli El Khoury as Undersecretary, supported by an Advisory Committee including Asma Al Fahim, Rym Al Falasy, Rima Al Mokarrab, and Meera Al Suwaidi.

Through its initiatives, DCAD aspires to establish new avenues for upcoming talent, encourage inter-sector collaborations, and integrate sustainability and technology into design practices—positioning Abu Dhabi as a leader in the global creative landscape.
