China Defends UK Embassy Expansion, Says Plans Follow Law and Diplomatic Rules

Post by : Saif Nasser

China has said it is fully following the law and international diplomatic rules in its plans to build a new embassy building in the United Kingdom. The statement came after the British government approved China’s proposal to construct its largest embassy in Europe, located in London.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that all planning related to the new embassy has been handled properly. He stressed that China respects international diplomatic practices and has followed all relevant laws and regulations in the process.

The approval by the UK government marks an important moment in relations between London and Beijing. British officials said the decision was made with the hope of improving diplomatic ties with China, which have faced tension in recent years over trade, security, and human rights issues.

However, the project has not been without controversy. Some British and American politicians have raised concerns that a large Chinese embassy could be used for intelligence gathering or spying. These warnings have fueled public debate in the UK about national security and foreign influence.

China has strongly rejected these concerns. Officials in Beijing say such accusations are unfair and politically motivated. They argue that embassies exist to manage diplomacy, provide consular services, and support communication between countries, not to carry out illegal activities.

From China’s point of view, the new embassy reflects the growing importance of its relationship with the UK and Europe. A larger building would allow China to better serve its diplomats and citizens while strengthening official ties with Britain.

For the UK government, approving the project shows a willingness to keep diplomatic channels open, even while disagreements remain. British leaders have said engagement is necessary to manage differences and protect national interests.

As construction plans move forward, the embassy project is likely to remain under close public and political scrutiny. The debate highlights the challenge many countries face in balancing diplomacy, economic interests, and security concerns in an increasingly complex global environment.
