A recent international report has placed Singapore's Changi Airport among the most carbon-intensive airports globally, highlighting ongoing issues related to aviation emissions and environmental sustainability.
The 2026 Airport Tracker from Transport & Environment and ODI Global lists Changi Airport in ninth place worldwide, showing approximately 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023.
This study analyzed data from nearly 1,300 airports globally, utilizing aviation emissions information sourced from the International Council on Clean Transportation.
Researchers noted that the Asia-Pacific region stands as the largest contributor to aviation-associated carbon emissions, making up almost 32 percent of the global aviation CO2 footprint.
Jude Lee, regional director for Transport & Environment, emphasized the need for transparent emissions reporting as Singapore seeks to enhance its contributions to sustainable aviation and green finance.
Furthermore, the report indicates that the top 100 airports are accountable for about two-thirds of emissions from passenger flights, raising alarms regarding the ecological effects of significant aviation centers.
Experts caution that international scrutiny on airports is likely to intensify, especially as the European Union evaluates the possibility of expanding carbon pricing regulations to encompass all departing international flights.
The study reveals that a limited number of airports have established credible, long-term net-zero emissions strategies that address indirect aviation emissions.
