British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Turkey on June 30 in what is seen as an important step in building closer ties between the two countries. This was Lammy’s first official visit to Turkey since becoming the UK’s top diplomat. The trip shows how both nations want to grow their partnership, especially in business, defence, and efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.
During the visit, Lammy met with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. Their talks covered a wide range of subjects — from trade deals to defence plans and cooperation on solving regional problems.
Trade Talks Aim for Bigger Goals
One of the main topics during the meeting was trade. The UK and Turkey already have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), but both sides believe it needs to be updated. At present, the two countries trade about £28 billion worth of goods and services each year.
Lammy said the UK is ready to improve the deal to help businesses grow and to create more investment opportunities. Turkish officials agreed, saying a better agreement could open more doors in areas like energy, factories, and new technology.
For Turkey, new trade deals are very important. The country has been going through hard times with rising prices and a weak currency. A stronger deal with the UK — one of the world’s largest economies — would be a big help.
Defence Deals and Military Support
Another major topic was defence. Turkey is interested in buying Eurofighter Typhoon jets to strengthen its air force. The UK supports this deal and is helping to push it forward. However, approval is still needed from other countries involved in the Eurofighter program — including Germany, Italy, and Spain.
Turkey wants to modernize its air force due to growing tensions in the region. Ongoing problems in Syria and the wider Middle East have made defence a top priority for the country.
For the UK, this deal could mean closer military ties with Turkey, a fellow NATO member. It could also support British defence companies. However, not everyone agrees — Germany has raised concerns in the past, especially over Turkey’s political stance on the Gaza conflict.
Talks between the countries are continuing in hopes of finding a shared solution.
Working Together for Peace in the Middle East
The timing of Lammy’s visit is also important for the Middle East. Recently, Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire after months of growing tension. Lammy and Fidan discussed how to keep the peace and avoid new fighting.
Fidan also welcomed the UK’s move to lift some sanctions on Syria. He said this was a good step, and he praised Lammy’s plan to visit Syria soon. Turkey believes that peace and security in Syria are key for the region, especially to stop people from being forced to leave their homes.
Lammy said the UK wants to work closely with Turkey and other countries to bring peace to the region. He said the goal is to reduce conflict and help people live safer and better lives.
