Blake Lively Seeks $160 Million in Defamation Case

Blake Lively Seeks $160 Million in Defamation Case

Post by : Mina Rahman

Blake Lively, the renowned actress and entrepreneur, is pursuing damages exceeding US$160 million due to an alleged smear campaign that has gravely affected her career and business endeavors during the rollout of the film It Ends With Us. Newly released court documents shed light on Lively’s claimed losses and the continuing legal confrontations that ensued.

Claimed Financial Setbacks Detailed in Lawsuit

Originally filed in July 2025 and unsealed only recently, the legal documents from Lively’s defense team indicate significant financial losses. Lively claims that she incurred roughly $56.2 million in lost past and anticipated earnings, which encompass her acting roles, public speaking opportunities, and endorsement contracts.

Moreover, Lively asserts that her entrepreneurial projects have been severely impacted. According to the lawsuit, her haircare line, Blake Brown, and her beverage enterprises, Betty Buzz and Betty Booze, reportedly lost $71 million in revenue. The documents also contend that she experienced $34 million in reputational damages resulting from what her legal team describes as defamatory remarks aimed at her professional and personal integrity.

Increased Damage Estimates Presented

When Lively filed her initial lawsuit on December 31, 2024, the damages were stated to be above $75,000 — a necessary threshold to begin the proceedings. However, recent updates to the defense have seen this estimate climb to at least $161 million, with her attorneys also seeking punitive damages that could potentially triple that amount.

Her legal documents indicate that the stated damages will require validation through expert witness testimony during the trial, currently scheduled for March 2026.

The backdrop of this lawsuit includes a larger legal dispute involving Justin Baldoni, Lively's co-star from It Ends With Us. Baldoni has countered with a $400 million defamation and extortion suit against Lively and her spouse, Ryan Reynolds, alleging they spearheaded a smear campaign against him. However, U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Liman recently dismissed Baldoni's claims, as he failed to adhere to a court deadline to adjust his complaint.

Judge Liman observed that while Baldoni and his production firm alleged defamatory remarks, they did not sufficiently demonstrate those statements were made with genuine doubts regarding their truthfulness— a critical element necessary for proving defamation. The court also dismissed Baldoni’s extortion allegations and his case against news outlets that reported on Lively’s harassment claims.

Court Decisions and Ongoing Litigation

The dismissal of Baldoni's countersuit followed the court granting him the opportunity to amend his complaint concerning particular allegations of contractual interference and breach of the implied covenant. Nevertheless, the court refuted claims that Lively had appropriated creative control over the film, asserting those accusations did not fulfill the definition of extortion.

Judge Liman's conclusive order emphasized that only statements made by Lively in her formal complaint enjoy protection by privilege, whereas further accusations levied by Reynolds and others are not established as defamatory.

Baldoni's legal representatives may still appeal this dismissal, awaiting a decision from the court regarding Lively's motion for legal expenses.

Lively’s Allegations of Harassment and Repercussions

Lively initially initiated her lawsuit with allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation associated with her experiences on the set of It Ends With Us. She accuses Baldoni and others related to the film of executing a concerted effort to undermine her reputation after she divulged her allegations.

Her claims detail substantial financial and reputational repercussions that she attributes to this orchestrated campaign, which she asserts has directly influenced her career in acting as well as her business ventures.

As the trial approaches in March 2026, the legal spectacle garners attention from both the entertainment and legal sectors, featuring high-profile individuals and monumental sums at stake.
