The Kingdom of Bahrain engaged in a significant open debate at the United Nations Security Council in New York, focusing on the theme of upholding the UN Charter and fostering global peace and security.
Chaired by Wang Yi, the session featured participation from UN Security Council members, including António Guterres and various heads of state and foreign ministers.
Leading the Bahraini delegation, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain’s strong commitment to the UN Charter's principles. He highlighted the importance of respecting state sovereignty, avoiding interference, rejecting the use of force, and advocating for peaceful dispute resolution.
Dr. Al Zayani addressed the serious global challenges we face, such as armed conflicts, terrorism, humanitarian crises, and emerging issues like climate change and health risks. He stressed that the multilateral system is under strain, urging the Security Council to enhance global cooperation and trust.
He also focused on the plight of the Palestinian people, advocating for international efforts to promote a two-state solution and expedite full UN membership for Palestine.
Furthermore, he endorsed ongoing international initiatives concerning Gaza aimed at ceasing hostilities, rebuilding, and initiating a political process for enduring peace, referencing the “Board of Peace” discussions led by Donald Trump.
The minister pointed out that civilians, especially women and children, suffer the most from conflicts. He expressed concern that global crises have exacerbated food insecurity for millions and dislocated populations worldwide.
On matters of regional security, he referred to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that disruptions in maritime routes could affect global trade, energy, food, and medical supplies. He called for the safeguarding of international navigation in accordance with international law.
He urged the Islamic Republic of Iran to fulfill its international responsibilities and adhere to principles of good-neighbourliness, while also advocating for a cessation of support for armed groups and destabilizing actions, consistent with Bahrain’s stance.
Dr. Al Zayani welcomed the diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, facilitated by regional initiatives, expressing hope for continued advancement towards sustainable peace.
He reiterated that achieving stability in the Middle East necessitates addressing conflicts in Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, along with broader security challenges in the region.
He underscored that navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz is critical for global trade and must be protected under international agreements.
Bahrain also emphasized its expanding role on the international stage, particularly as it prepares for its upcoming presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council and active involvement in the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
The minister noted Bahrain's impending term on the Security Council for 2026-2027 and its efforts to promote collaboration in areas such as women, peace and security, youth engagement, and digital transformation.
He also highlighted the need for responsible technology and artificial intelligence use to bridge the digital divide and counter extremism.
In conclusion, Dr. Al Zayani called for comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council to enhance its effectiveness and representation of current global realities, asserting that a more robust UN Charter is essential for worldwide peace and stability.
