Babar Azam Becomes Top Run Scorer In T20I Cricket History

Post by : Mara Rahim

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has made cricket history by becoming the highest run-scorer in men’s T20 International (T20I) cricket. He achieved this milestone during Pakistan’s nine-wicket victory over South Africa in Lahore on Friday. The 30-year-old star overtook Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s record in front of a cheering home crowd at Gaddafi Stadium.

Babar reached the record with a beautiful drive to long-off from South African spinner Donovan Ferreira. This shot took his total T20I runs to 4,234. He remained unbeaten on 11 runs, helping Pakistan chase down the target easily. Fans in the stadium celebrated loudly as their captain reached another major milestone in his career.

Before this match, Rohit Sharma held the record for the most T20I runs with 4,231 runs in 159 matches. Babar passed this total in just 130 matches, showing his consistency and class. Rohit had earlier retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, leaving his record for Babar to chase.

Since making his T20I debut in 2016, Babar Azam has shown great consistency and patience. His T20I career includes 4,234 runs with 36 fifties and three centuries at a strike rate of 129. His calm style and ability to play under pressure have made him one of the world’s most dependable batters.

Babar’s return to the T20I team after almost a year was important. He came back after Fakhar Zaman was rested for the South Africa series. In the first match in Rawalpindi, he was out for zero, missing the chance to break Rohit’s record. But in the Lahore match, he reached the milestone smoothly, showing confidence and control.

Pakistan’s bowlers kept South Africa to a small total, and their batsmen finished the chase easily. Babar stayed calm and focused, while his opening partner attacked from the other end. The victory also gave Pakistan a series lead and showed their dominance in T20 cricket once again.

Babar’s new record adds to his growing list of achievements. He is already among the fastest players to reach 1,000 ODI runs and holds several records across all formats. His steady performances against strong teams have made him one of the most respected batsmen in world cricket today.

Some cricket experts have questioned Babar’s strike rate, saying it is slower than other modern hitters. His strike rate of 129 is lower than players like Suryakumar Yadav or Jos Buttler. However, many believe Babar’s role is to anchor the innings and build partnerships while others play freely. His approach has often helped Pakistan win key matches.

Babar Azam’s leadership has changed Pakistan’s approach to cricket. As captain, he brought stability, focus, and teamwork. His calm nature helps teammates stay relaxed in high-pressure situations. Even when not leading, his presence gives the team confidence and direction.

Babar remains focused on Pakistan’s upcoming tournaments, including the ICC Champions Trophy. He aims to help his team succeed rather than chase personal records. Still, becoming the highest run-scorer in T20Is is a proud achievement that both he and Pakistan will remember for years.

For Pakistan’s cricket fans, this record means more than numbers. It tells the story of a boy from Lahore who rose through hard work and discipline to become one of the best in the world. Babar Azam’s journey inspires millions, representing Pakistan’s bright future in world cricket.
