Portugal's Azores archipelago has issued a red alert—the highest level of emergency—as Cyclone Gabrielle approaches. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has warned of extreme weather conditions, including winds between 130 and 200 km/h (81-124 mph) and sea swells reaching up to 18 meters (59 feet).
In anticipation of the storm, authorities have canceled all tourist and recreational activities for 24 hours and closed schools and public services. Residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid coastal and riverside areas during the storm's passage.
Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to impact seven of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago. The region, known for its lush volcanic landscapes and rainy weather, is home to approximately 250,000 people.
The IPMA continues to monitor the storm's progress and will provide updates as necessary. Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and follow official advisories to ensure safety during the storm.
