Australian Passenger Dies After Being Left Ashore During Cruise Visit to Lizard Island

Post by : Raina Nasser

An 80-year-old Australian passenger has died on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef after being unintentionally left ashore by a cruise vessel following a shore excursion. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has launched an inquiry into the circumstances.

Identified by family as Suzanne, the woman took part in a group walk to Cook’s Look — the island’s highest point — on October 24. She fell behind the group and paused to rest; when crew members later discovered she was missing, a search was conducted and her body was recovered the following morning. Queensland Police have described the death as "sudden and non-suspicious."

The voyage was aboard the Coral Adventurer, part of a 60-day luxury itinerary around Australia with fares reported at about AU$80,000 (US$50,000). Fellow travellers and some crew have expressed shock and called the outcome preventable.

Suzanne’s daughter, Katherine Rees, said the family is devastated the vessel departed after an organised excursion without her mother on board. She told reporters the family believes there was a lapse in care and oversight, adding that her mother — an active gardener in good health — became unwell in the heat and was left unescorted ashore before the ship sailed.

AMSA has confirmed the Coral Adventurer's crew will be interviewed when the ship docks in Darwin on November 2. Investigators are examining how the passenger went unaccounted for during re-boarding and whether established safety procedures were followed.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny on cruise-operator responsibilities, passenger accounting processes and the management of shore excursions, with advocates urging tighter safeguards to avoid similar tragedies.

The death on Lizard Island has generated widespread concern across Australia and underscores the need for robust emergency preparedness and clear accountability on passenger voyages.
