Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has long been a vocal critic of censorship in Indian cinema. Recently, in a podcast conversation with Komal Nahta, he revealed a significant shift in his stance on the issue.
Kashyap expressed, “My views on censorship have transformed considerably. When I sought certification for my own film, I discovered that the reality was not as grim as I had perceived. Previously, I had publicly condemned censorship. However, during my visit with the board members, they were courteous and even expressed surprise that my film lacked violence or inappropriate language. They found humor in my consistent battles over compromise and commercialization.”
He mentioned that the censor board also clarified their position. “They explained that they are merely abiding by the guidelines set before them. If filmmakers think those rules require alteration, a united demand for change is essential first,” he stated.
While Kashyap did not specify which film he was referencing, his latest project, Nishaanchi, featuring Aaishvary Thackeray, Vedika Pinto, and Monika Panwar, premiered on September 19.
