Amber Valletta introduced a moment of deliberate fashion retrospection at the CFDA Fashion Awards 2025 in New York, arriving on the red carpet in the signature green, jungle-print Versace gown she first modelled more than two decades ago. The 51-year-old originally showcased the plunging piece on the Versace Spring/Summer 2000 runway—a look later immortalised by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards.
On the red carpet Valletta described the appearance as the gown's public comeback, saying it felt particularly meaningful and calling the garment "magical" as she stepped into the evening.
The choice carried personal significance beyond style. Valletta posted behind-the-scenes footage to her social channels, explaining that wearing the dress served as a tribute to Donatella Versace, who was being recognised by the CFDA with its Positive Change Award for her philanthropic and cultural contributions.
Valletta added that honoring Donatella at the ceremony was entirely fitting, noting the designer's deserved recognition for her philanthropic work.
A Defining Moment in Fashion History
The jungle-print gown first attracted attention when Valletta modelled it in 1999, but its status as a cultural touchstone was cemented when Jennifer Lopez wore it to the 2000 Grammys. That high-profile moment generated widespread media attention and is often cited as a catalyst for the launch of Google Images.
Lopez has since recalled that the decision to wear the green dress was instantaneous the moment she tried it on: “That’s it. That’s the dress.”
Through the years the striking print has been revisited by figures such as Tyra Banks, Lisa Rinna and Donatella Versace herself, while Lopez reprised the look in a 2019 runway appearance.
Reflecting on the garment’s legacy, Valletta observed that the dress has become one of the most searched fashion moments in history, saying it effectively "broke the internet" and acknowledging her role in its origin with a touch of pride.
CFDA Ceremony Highlights
The CFDA Awards, overseen by the organisation’s leadership, convened leading names from the fashion and entertainment spheres. Amid the evening’s honours and presentations, Valletta’s revival of the iconic Versace gown emerged as a defining visual moment.
