Alina Habba, who previously served as Donald Trump’s personal attorney, has resigned from her position as the US attorney for New Jersey following a court ruling that deemed her appointment unlawful. This decision came after it was found that her temporary assignment was made without Senate confirmation, infringing on federal law.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi has accepted Habba’s resignation, but she will continue her role at the Justice Department as a senior adviser while working towards a review of the situation. In her resignation, Habba noted her intention to maintain the stability and integrity of the office, asserting that her pursuit of lawful appointments will extend across the country.
During her time in office, crime rates in Newark dropped by 20%, while Camden experienced its first summer without a homicide in half a century. Habba also represented Trump in several high-profile legal battles, including the trial related to hush money in New York.
Her departure underscores an ongoing issue with the legality of acting US attorney appointments, as numerous individuals appointed by Trump have similarly been found to have served unlawfully.
