Alarming Spike in Child Abductions Amid Nigerian School Attacks

Alarming Spike in Child Abductions Amid Nigerian School Attacks

Post by : Shakul

Recent militant assaults on educational institutions in Nigeria have resulted in over 80 children being reported missing, igniting widespread alarm regarding student safety across the nation.

Sources from human rights organizations and local authorities indicate that a primary school in the northeastern Borno State was targeted by militants between Wednesday and Thursday, leading to the abduction of numerous children in the Askira Uba and Chibok regions.

Amnesty International noted that the attack occurred in Mussa, a village adjacent to the Sambisa Forest, an area recognized as a haven for Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Authorities have confirmed that a minimum of 42 children were taken during the Borno State assault, which underscores the persistent danger posed by armed groups in northern Nigeria.

In a separate event, armed assailants targeted two secondary schools in Oyo State, situated in southwestern Nigeria, on Friday. Reports from Amnesty International indicated that around 40 students were abducted in these attacks, which took place within hours of one another.

Local government representative Peter Wabba mentioned that the number of abducted children in Oyo may actually be as high as 48. Families are anxiously awaiting action from authorities to recover their loved ones.

Oyo State police confirmed the capture of three individuals linked to the school attacks, following identification by community members. Investigations are ongoing to uncover potential additional suspects.

Human rights advocates caution that continuous assaults on schools are prompting many families to keep their children away from educational settings. In certain regions, families are reportedly considering premature marriages for girls due to fears of abductions and violence.

Over recent years, school kidnappings in Nigeria have evolved into a significant security concern, with armed factions frequently assaulting educational facilities to instill fear, draw media attention, and extort ransom payments.
