The Ajman Department of Municipal Affairs and Planning has made remarkable strides in environmental sustainability in 2026, significantly enhancing the emirate's ecological performance.
The Department's latest report highlights exceptional outcomes in both air quality and waste management for the first quarter, aligning with its strategic objectives for long-term environmental health. These goals encompass pollution reduction efforts, progress toward carbon neutrality, biodiversity protection, natural resource conservation, and the enhancement of integrated waste systems as part of the Ajman 2030 vision.
Dr. Eng. Khalid Maeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, emphasized that strengthened coordination and ongoing efforts have refined monitoring and environmental inspection protocols. Improved management of oil and grease waste and initiatives aimed at boosting regulatory compliance among businesses were also highlighted.
Official figures indicate that Ajman achieved a remarkable 97.60% of days featuring good air quality during Q1 2026. This outcome underscores the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at pollution reduction, particularly in urban settings. The indicator for handled waste rose to 25%, demonstrating improvements in waste management and adherence to environmental regulations.
There was a significant surge in oil and grease waste collection compared to 2025. In January alone, collection reached 232,411 gallons, a major increase from 101,642 gallons last year. February saw 210,872 gallons collected, up from 80,761, while March yielded 85,270 gallons, a rise from 34,866 gallons. These increases, from 129% to 161%, are attributed to an electronic tracking system, improved data fidelity, broad coverage, and enhanced inspection efforts.
The Department has also launched the “Carbon-Zero Schools” initiative, with 60 schools participating in Q1, including 20 public and 40 private institutions. Awareness workshops have been organized to inform students, alongside the establishment of a dedicated committee to oversee implementation.
Inspection efforts have intensified, totaling 500 inspections since the beginning of the year. These inspections specifically targeted facilities dealing with chemicals, oils, and other operations of significant environmental impact in sensitive areas, ensuring compliance and mitigating risks.
Moreover, ongoing projects include establishing a waste sorting line at a transfer station, with a daily capacity exceeding 500 tonnes. This initiative aims to heighten recycling rates and minimize landfill deposition. Additional projects are focused on sewage sludge treatment, hazardous waste management, and waste-to-energy studies, all of which support a robust circular economy.
Officials have stated that these outcomes showcase the continuous enhancements in Ajman’s environmental framework via solid policies and dedicated projects. The Department remains committed to fostering collaboration with both public and private sectors to cultivate a cleaner, sustainable future.
