The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has emphasized the need for a prompt conclusion to the EU-US trade talks ahead of the trilogue meetings set for May 6. The association believes that swift finalization will significantly benefit European car exports.
ACEA praised the strong backing from the European Parliament and acknowledged the positive role played by the Council of the European Union. Accelerating the deal's completion is deemed crucial for providing clarity within the automotive sector, enabling companies to capitalize fully on the agreement.
Following the United Kingdom, the United States ranks as the second-largest export destination for EU vehicles, making up 18.4% of total EU car exports in 2025. Approximately 670,000 vehicles were shipped to the US, valued at €31 billion.
The report also noted a rise in clean vehicle shipments. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 12% of exports to the US in 2025, totaling 80,205 electric cars valued at almost €4 billion.
ACEA highlighted that European manufacturers produce around 830,000 vehicles annually in the US, with 50% to 60% of these being exported, including some returning to the EU. This underlines the necessity for maintaining stable trade relations between these two regions.
The European automotive sector plays a vital role in the economy, supporting an estimated 13.6 million jobs, which constitutes 8.1% of the EU's total manufacturing employment. This sector contributes over 8% to the EU's GDP, maintains a trade surplus of €93.9 billion, and invests €84.6 billion annually in research and development.
ACEA is urging both the European Parliament and the Council to collaborate and expedite their agreement, stating that a timely trade deal will fortify Europe's automotive industry's positions globally.
