Abu Dhabi Enhances Infectious Disease Capacities with Lab Expansion

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Abu Dhabi is making significant progress in its public health strategy with the recent expansion of the Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases (RLID-AD). This development enhances the emirate’s capabilities to detect, monitor, and respond to infectious diseases, thereby improving its preparedness for health crises.

Located at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the upgraded lab is tailored for advanced molecular diagnostics and sophisticated infectious disease testing. The new workflows streamline processes from sample collection to genetic sequencing, enabling the lab to handle a much larger volume of tests while adhering to rigorous quality and biosafety standards. This advancement facilitates quicker diagnoses and enhances disease surveillance, particularly during outbreaks or potential pandemics.

A prominent feature of this initiative is the deployment of a BSL-3 mobile laboratory trailer. This specialized unit allows for immediate testing and analysis at outbreak sites, significantly improving response times and supporting swift containment efforts. Built according to international guidelines, the mobile lab enhances Abu Dhabi’s biosafety protocols and adds a versatile component to its epidemic response framework.

The laboratory, operated by PureLab under the PureHealth umbrella, exemplifies strong collaboration between public health authorities and healthcare providers. It plays a pivotal role in both national and global disease surveillance, being recognized by the World Health Organization as a National Influenza Centre. Beyond influenza, the facility is equipped to test for measles, rubella, and a variety of other infectious agents.

Another important aspect is its highly qualified staff, with over half comprising UAE nationals. This focus on local expertise showcases the emirate’s commitment to nurturing talent in specialized public health and laboratory science fields.

Ultimately, the expansion of the Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases is in line with Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision of establishing a robust, forward-thinking health system. By investing in state-of-the-art diagnostics, mobile biosafety units, and cultivating local talent, the region continually fortifies its capabilities to safeguard public health against emerging infectious disease challenges.
