49 Undocumented Migrants, Including 30 Indians, Arrested for Trucking Violations in the US

In a series of operations, US border authorities have detained 49 undocumented migrants for unlawfully operating semitrucks with commercial licenses in California. Notably, 30 of those apprehended hailed from India, representing the largest group involved.

The arrests occurred in California’s El Centro region due to routine vehicle checks at immigration stops and coordinated enforcement actions over multiple weeks. Agents stopped these individuals while traveling on key interstate routes or crossing checkpoints in commercial vehicles.

From November 23 to December 12, a total of 42 undocumented migrants were intercepted while driving semitrucks without legal immigration status. Additional arrests were conducted in a separate, extensive operation aimed at the commercial trucking sector.

Other arrested individuals included nationals from El Salvador, China, Eritrea, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Russia, Somalia, Turkey, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Authorities noted that many of the commercial driver’s licenses used by those arrested were issued in California, with additional licenses traced to states like Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

In mid-December, a focused two-day operation targeting commercial trucking firms in California resulted in 45 arrests of undocumented license holders. The operation saw two drivers detained on the first day, followed by five more the next.

This enforcement action was prompted by rising concerns over road safety following several serious accidents attributed to undocumented truck drivers. Authorities have witnessed a direct correlation between undocumented drivers operating heavy vehicles and fatal incidents, warranting increased scrutiny within the trucking field.

Officials emphasized the operation's goals were to reinforce immigration laws, enhance highway safety, and ensure adherence to transportation regulations, insisting that individuals lacking legal status should not operate vehicles that present substantial risks to public welfare.

Enforcement bodies have suggested that similar initiatives may recur in the weeks ahead as part of a broader strategy to tackle immigration transgressions and elevate safety standards throughout US roadways.
