Alex Palou, the four-time IndyCar champion from Spain, has opened up in a London court about how McLaren misled him while he chased his dream to race in Formula One.
The 26-year-old driver told the court that the contract he signed with McLaren in 2022 “was based on lies and false promises.” He eventually broke that contract to stay with his IndyCar team, Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR), a move that has led to a legal fight. McLaren is now asking him to pay about $20 million for canceling the contract.
Palou, who recently won the prestigious 2025 Indianapolis 500, is widely regarded as one of the best drivers in IndyCar. Despite his success, he said McLaren tried to use the idea of a Formula One career to convince him to join their less competitive IndyCar team. “It felt like a negotiating trick,” Palou told the court.
Palou first signed with McLaren after winning his first IndyCar championship in March 2022. At that time, he believed he had a chance to achieve his dream of racing in Formula One while still young and at the top of his career. “I knew F1 would be very hard, but I was ready to try,” he said.
The situation became complicated when Australian driver Oscar Piastri announced on Twitter that he would replace Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren for the 2023 F1 season. Despite this, Palou went ahead and signed another contract with McLaren. He said he had been repeatedly promised by McLaren boss Zak Brown that he could still have a shot at Formula One.
Zak Brown allegedly told Palou in multiple meetings that McLaren valued IndyCar drivers and that he would help Palou prepare for a future F1 seat. Palou explained, “Zak said he would give me all the support I needed to become a McLaren Formula One driver. That gave me hope.”
By October 2022, it became clear that McLaren’s plans had shifted. Brown told Palou that signing Piastri was not his decision but that of the team’s then-principal, Andreas Seidl. Brown also told Palou that his performance would be compared with Piastri’s for the 2024 seat.
As Palou’s F1 hopes dimmed, he explored other options. He spoke to Helmut Marko, a Red Bull consultant, about joining AlphaTauri (now called Racing Bulls) in June 2023. Marko asked how much it would take to release Palou from McLaren, but after discussions with Brown, he lost interest.
During the hearing, McLaren’s lawyer accused Palou of misleading the team by signing an IndyCar contract he allegedly did not intend to honor. Palou strongly denied this, saying, “Absolutely not. This is not true. I am following the truth and my dream.”
Palou also noted that although his legal costs are covered by Chip Ganassi Racing, his salary is lower than the top three IndyCar earners. This shows the sacrifices he made to stay true to his career goals.
The London High Court will continue hearing the case on October 20, with final arguments set for November 5. The case could set an important precedent in how contracts and promises are handled between racing teams and drivers.
Palou’s story highlights the difficult choices professional drivers face when chasing their dreams. Even when a contract seems promising, the reality of team politics and shifting plans can change everything. For Palou, staying in IndyCar and continuing to win championships is now his priority, even while fighting for justice in court.
