Tram Derails & Crashes Into Building in Milan – 2 Dead, Dozens Injured

A serious tram accident occurred in central Milan, Italy, when a tram operating on Line 9 derailed and crashed into a building on Viale Vittorio Veneto near Via Lazzaretto, killing at least two people and injuring dozens of others. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and medical teams, rushed to the scene to assist victims and secure the area.

The tram, one of the newest Tramlink models introduced in the city’s public transport fleet, was traveling at a high rate of speed in the mid-afternoon when it left the tracks. Authorities confirmed two fatalities: a 60-year-old Italian man and a 56-year-old Senegalese man, one of whom was struck on the street and the other a passenger on board. The number of injured passengers and bystanders is reported to be up to around 50, with several people in serious or critical condition. Local hospitals have taken in the wounded, and a temporary triage area was set up near the crash site.

Initial investigations are focusing on possible causes of the derailment. Prosecutors and transport officials are examining whether the tram’s driver failed to activate a track switch, causing the tram to take an unintended turn at speed. Some reports also mention that the driver may have suffered a sudden illness moments before the accident, which could have contributed to loss of control, but authorities are working to verify all details as part of the official inquiry.

The derailment took place during a busy time for the city, which recently hosted major international events and is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for upcoming cultural and sporting activities. City officials and union representatives have expressed shock and sorrow, calling for a thorough investigation and renewed attention to transit safety.

Emergency responders cleared debris and later reopened parts of the transport line after the wrecked tram was removed. Authorities remain at the scene while gathering evidence and supporting families of those affected by the tragic crash.
