Spanish authorities have made the largest cocaine seizure in the country’s history after confiscating 10 tonnes of the illegal drug from a cargo ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The operation, described as “unprecedented” by law enforcement officials, highlights Spain’s ongoing battle against international drug trafficking.
The haul was discovered following intelligence-led operations targeting organized crime networks known for shipping narcotics from South America to Europe. Officials said the cocaine was hidden in a container aboard the vessel and was intended for distribution across multiple European countries.
Law enforcement officers coordinated across multiple agencies to intercept the ship before it reached Spanish ports. Investigators said that the value of the seized cocaine could run into hundreds of millions of euros on the black market, underlining the scale and economic impact of the operation.
Authorities also reported the arrest of several crew members and individuals connected to the trafficking network. Investigations are ongoing, with Spanish police collaborating closely with international partners to trace the origins of the shipment and dismantle the organized crime networks responsible.
This record-breaking seizure comes amid a broader European effort to curb the flow of illegal narcotics into the continent. Spain, often a key entry point due to its geographic location, has seen a steady increase in drug trafficking attempts in recent years.
