A Russian drone strike struck a Ukrainian passenger train in the Kharkiv region, resulting in the deaths of at least five civilians and leaving multiple others injured. Ukrainian officials said the train was carrying ordinary passengers at the time of the attack, highlighting the continued risk faced by civilians amid the ongoing conflict.
Emergency services rushed to the scene to evacuate the wounded and assess the damage. Images and video shared by local authorities showed damaged train carriages, shattered windows, and emergency responders assisting injured passengers. The attack caused temporary disruptions to rail services in the region as safety checks and rescue operations were carried out.
Ukrainian officials condemned the strike, calling it another example of attacks on civilian infrastructure. They emphasized that passenger trains are critical for civilian transport, especially as many Ukrainians rely on rail travel to evacuate or move between regions during the war.
Russian officials have not immediately commented on the incident. The Kharkiv region, located near Ukraine’s northeastern border, has repeatedly come under missile and drone attacks as fighting continues. International organizations have repeatedly warned about the growing toll on civilians and the destruction of non-military infrastructure since the conflict began.
