Supporters of Iran’s government have taken to the streets in multiple cities to hold pro-government rallies, even as the country faces large and ongoing protests driven by the rising cost of living. In Tehran and other cities such as Kerman, Zahedan and Birjand, people gathered to show support for the authorities and condemn what they called “terrorist acts,” according to official reports. These demonstrations come amid a powerful wave of anti-government protests that began in late December and were sparked by worsening economic conditions, including inflation and a sharp drop in the value of the Iranian currency. The official rallies are seen as an effort by the government to show popular backing at a time when many citizens are unhappy with their financial situation. Despite these government-lined events, anti-government demonstrations have continued across Iran, reflecting deep and widespread frustration among ordinary people.
