Mass Celebrations Break Out Across Iran After Khamenei’s Death

Post by : Saif Nasser

After Iranian state media and international governments confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, spontaneous celebrations broke out across parts of Iran, with residents taking to the streets to express joy and relief at the end of nearly four decades of his rule. Videos shared widely on social media and verified by independent reporters show people in cities such as Tehran, Karaj, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Abdanan dancing, honking car horns, setting off fireworks, and cheering loud chants in neighbourhoods and public spaces.

In Tehran, crowds were seen on rooftops and balconies waving flags, playing music, and applauding, while whistles and celebratory shouts echoed through residential districts — even as communication networks remained disrupted in many areas. Some footage captured residents holding up white cloths as a symbol of peace and chanting slogans associated with freedom and change.

The celebrations appeared to be both public and cautious. In some neighbourhoods, people gathered briefly before dispersing quickly, possibly to avoid confrontation with security forces. In other places with less visible security presence, larger groups danced and cheered far into the night.

These scenes, while not uniform across all regions, highlight a profound societal divide in Iran. Alongside the celebrations, official ceremonies of mourning and loyalty to Khamenei were also taking place in several cities, particularly in state-organised gatherings where citizens, dressed mostly in black, chanted slogans praising the late leader and expressing sorrow over his passing.

Online reactions from Iranians and diaspora communities further illustrated this range of emotions. In cities like London, Iranian exiles and others were seen celebrating together, waving both Israeli and pre-1979 Iranian flags as a symbolic show of solidarity against the clerical regime.

The celebratory scenes stem from decades of discontent among many Iranians over political repression, economic hardship, and violent crackdowns on dissent, including during major protests in recent years. However, others mourned the death as a national loss and signaled respect and loyalty to the clerical establishment.

Despite the scenes of jubilation, uncertainty remains high as Iran navigates a leadership transition. Authorities announced a period of official mourning, and security forces have been on alert to maintain order in the complex and sensitive aftermath of Khamenei’s death.
