Major Militant Attack Hits Niamey Airport and Air Base in Niger, Heavy Fighting Reported

A major militant assault targeted Niamey’s international airport and an adjacent military air base in Niger, leading to heavy fighting between attackers and national security forces. Gunfire and explosions were reported in and around the facilities as troops moved quickly to repel the assault and secure critical infrastructure.

Security sources said the attackers attempted to breach sensitive areas linked to both civilian aviation and military operations. Nigerien armed forces responded with reinforcements, sealing off access roads and suspending airport activities as a precaution. Residents in nearby neighborhoods reported hearing sustained gunfire and seeing smoke rising from the area.

Authorities have not immediately released confirmed details on casualties or the number of attackers involved. Medical teams were placed on alert, and emergency services were deployed to assist those affected. Flights were temporarily disrupted as security sweeps were conducted to ensure there were no remaining threats.
