Israel and the United States have launched a major joint military operation against Iran, described by Israeli officials as a pre-emptive strike aimed at neutralizing what they say were imminent threats from Tehran. The coordinated assault began early Saturday and marked a dramatic escalation in the long-running conflict between Iran and its rivals.
Explosions were widely reported in Tehran and other urban areas as air defenses engaged incoming strike aircraft and missiles. Iranian state sources confirmed multiple blasts hitting the capital and other key regions, including what appeared to be military and government infrastructure.
According to reports, targets struck included strategic installations tied to Iran’s missile systems and command centers. The Israeli Defence Minister publicly acknowledged the operation as “pre-emptive,” stressing it aimed to eliminate threats to Israeli and regional security.
The offensive is understood to be part of a larger campaign — sometimes referred to as Operation Lion’s Roar — involving U.S. cruise missiles, fighter jets, drones, and advanced long-range munitions. The United States reportedly participated by launching strikes from both air and sea, enhancing the scale and precision of the attack on Iranian targets.
Within hours of the strikes, air raid sirens sounded in parts of Israel and neighbouring regions, with fears of retaliation prompting emergency measures and the declaration of a state of emergency in Israel.
Iran’s leadership condemned the attacks as illegal aggression and vowed to respond forcefully. In some areas, explosions and increased air defense activity have been reported as Iran’s forces begin launching ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli and allied positions in the region.
The strikes have prompted widespread concern among neighbouring Gulf countries and global powers. Airspaces have been restricted, and diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation into a larger regional war. Analysts warn the conflict could have far-reaching implications for Middle East stability and global energy markets.
Several governments and international organisations have called for restraint while monitoring the rapidly evolving situation.
