Iran national football team is facing growing uncertainty ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as delays in obtaining United States visas continue to affect players, coaches, and football officials preparing for the tournament.
Iran’s football federation has confirmed that members of the national squad are still waiting for visa approvals despite the World Cup being only weeks away. Officials from the federation said discussions with FIFA are ongoing as the team seeks guarantees regarding travel arrangements and participation in the tournament.
The Iranian squad recently traveled to Turkey for a training camp while awaiting updates on visa processing. According to reports, the players may need to complete fingerprinting and documentation procedures outside Iran as part of the application process.
The visa delays come during a period of heightened political tensions between Iran and the United States. Concerns have increased following recent regional conflicts and diplomatic disputes involving both countries. The situation has raised questions about whether all Iranian players and officials will be able to enter the US smoothly before the tournament begins.
Iran has already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in the United States against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. FIFA has reportedly rejected requests to move Iran’s matches to Mexico, insisting that the original schedule will remain unchanged.
Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj said the federation remains in constant contact with FIFA regarding the issue. Officials expressed hope that the visa situation would be resolved before the team departs for North America.
The uncertainty has also affected preparations inside the squad. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei recently expressed concerns over disrupted preparations and limited match fitness among players after interruptions to domestic football activities in Iran.
The situation has sparked debate among football fans and sports analysts worldwide, with many questioning how political tensions could impact one of the world’s biggest sporting events. FIFA officials, however, have said recent meetings with Iranian football authorities were positive and constructive.
Several reports also noted that some Iranian officials previously faced travel restrictions linked to alleged ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and Canada. This has added further complexity to visa approvals for certain members of the delegation.
Despite the uncertainty, Team Melli continues training and preparing for the tournament while supporters remain hopeful that diplomatic and administrative issues will be resolved in time. Football fans across the Middle East and Asia are closely following developments as the countdown to the World Cup continues.
