Iran has launched a major wave of missiles and drones across the Middle East in retaliation for recent United States and Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory. These strikes have shaken several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, where explosions were reported in Abu Dhabi and other cities, marking an unprecedented escalation in regional conflict.
In the UAE, air defense systems have been operating at their highest alert, detecting and intercepting hundreds of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones aimed at the country’s skies. Officials say the majority of the incoming projectiles were intercepted, but falling debris from destroyed missiles and drones caused explosions and damage in urban areas, including around Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport and residential neighbourhoods.
At least three civilians — foreign workers from Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh — have been reported killed in attacks linked to falling debris or intercepted weapons over Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Dozens of others have been injured, and widespread smoke and fire were seen across parts of the UAE’s major cities.
Residents across Abu Dhabi and Dubai described loud blasts and shockwaves, with multiple explosions heard across neighbourhoods. Some eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke plumes from interception sites or where debris struck the ground, heightening fear among a population unaccustomed to direct military conflict on Emirati soil.
The Iranian offensive is not limited to the UAE. Missile and drone strikes have also been reported in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, many of which host U.S. military assets. Airspace closures and emergency alerts have been activated across the region as authorities respond to the fast-moving situation.
Governments in the Gulf have condemned the attacks as violations of national sovereignty and breaches of international law, stressing their right to defend against further threats. They have also called for restraint and dialogue to prevent the conflict from widening further.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts underway and militaries on heightened alert. This marks one of the most serious escalations in years in a region already strained by political tensions and military confrontations.
