Denmark F-35s and French MRTT Jets Carry Out Arctic Drill Over Greenland

Denmark’s advanced F-35 fighter jets and a French MRTT aerial refuelling aircraft have taken part in a joint NATO military exercise over Greenland, highlighting growing focus on Arctic security. The drill was designed to test how allied air forces operate in extreme cold, long distances, and harsh weather conditions found in the Arctic region.

During the exercise, Danish F-35s practiced long-range flight operations, air patrols, and coordination with allied support aircraft. The French MRTT aircraft played a key role by providing mid-air refuelling, allowing the fighter jets to stay airborne longer and cover wider areas. Such coordination is critical in the Arctic, where air bases are few and distances are vast.

NATO officials say the exercise aimed to improve readiness, communication, and interoperability among allied forces. The Arctic has become strategically important due to melting ice, opening new sea routes, and increased interest from global powers. As a result, NATO members are placing more attention on training in the region.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, holds major strategic value because of its location between North America and Europe. Regular exercises there help NATO ensure it can respond quickly to security challenges while maintaining stability in the High North.

Military experts say drills like this are not directed at any single country but are meant to strengthen collective defence. The exercise also shows how modern aircraft and support systems can work together even in the world’s most demanding environments.
