At least seven Palestinians, including a child and several women, were killed after Israeli airstrikes targeted the Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City. The attacks also injured dozens of people and caused major destruction in one of Gaza’s densely populated urban areas.
According to local medical officials and emergency responders, Israeli warplanes struck a residential apartment building and a civilian vehicle near the Abu Al-Kas junction in the Rimal district. Witnesses described powerful explosions followed by fires and heavy smoke rising above damaged buildings. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to search through rubble for survivors and recover victims.
Videos shared online showed residents carrying injured civilians through debris-covered streets as emergency workers attempted to control the chaos. Several nearby buildings also suffered damage from the blasts, increasing fears among families already displaced by months of conflict.
Israeli officials said the strike was aimed at senior Hamas military commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who Israel described as one of the main planners behind the October 7 attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the operation specifically targeted the Hamas armed wing leader.
However, Palestinian medics and civil defense officials said civilians were among the victims, including women and children living inside the targeted building. Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal stated that no evacuation warning was given before the attack, despite many families sheltering inside the residential complex.
The strike comes during continued instability in Gaza despite earlier ceasefire efforts. Fighting and air raids have continued across different parts of the territory as negotiations over a longer-term settlement remain stalled. International organizations have repeatedly warned about the worsening humanitarian situation facing civilians in Gaza, where many residents are living in overcrowded shelters and damaged buildings.
The Rimal district, once considered one of Gaza City’s busiest and most developed neighborhoods, has faced repeated attacks during the conflict. Large sections of the area have already been heavily damaged by previous airstrikes and military operations.
Human rights groups and international observers continue to express concern over the growing civilian death toll in Gaza. The latest airstrike is expected to increase international debate over the conduct of military operations in populated civilian areas and the urgent need for humanitarian protection measures.
As rescue operations continue, hospitals in Gaza remain under severe pressure due to shortages of medicine, fuel, and medical supplies. Doctors and aid workers say the ongoing violence is making it increasingly difficult to provide treatment for the injured and support displaced families across the region.
