The Indian cricket selectors have announced a robust 15-player squad for the impending ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, coinciding with the five-match T20I series against New Zealand set for January. Suryakumar Yadav is set to captain the side, with Axar Patel taking on the role of vice-captain.
The squad boasts the thrilling inclusion of young wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan and explosive batsman Rinku Singh, both showcasing significant potential in recent performances. Notably, Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma, who were part of recent T20 squads, have been excluded.
This announcement took place at the Board's Mumbai headquarters, presented by captain Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Axar Patel, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The selected team combines seasoned players and new talent, reinforcing India's mission to defend their T20 World Cup title.
The lineup includes Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Axar Patel (vice-captain), Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Rinku Singh.
Axar Patel resumes his duties as vice-captain after having previously filled the role prior to the England series earlier this year. Shubman Gill, who had been vice-captain during the Asia Cup and subsequent series, is sidelined due to a foot injury along with a decline in form, accumulating 291 runs in 15 innings this year without reaching a fifty or hundred.
Ishan Kishan secured his position following a remarkable season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he accumulated 517 runs in 10 innings at an impressive average of 57.32, boasting a strike rate close to 200, which includes two centuries and two fifties.
India’s squad is bolstered with formidable batsmen and dependable all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. The bowling unit is led by Jasprit Bumrah, featuring pace options Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, alongside wrist spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.
Ahead of the World Cup, India will compete against New Zealand in three ODIs and five T20Is, with the T20I series scheduled from January 21 to 31, providing critical preparation for the tournament ahead.
