Chennai is experiencing significant rainfall as the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah continue to impact the area. Authorities have subsequently announced the closure of schools and colleges across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts to prioritize student safety.
Early this morning, northern Tamil Nadu faced heavy downpours, while Chennai saw moderate rain throughout the day. The ongoing precipitation has led to waterlogging in various low-lying regions, disrupting daily activities and prompting precautionary actions.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system initially formed as a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal, later weakening into a well-marked low-pressure zone along the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry by 5:30 am IST on December 3, 2025. The IMD anticipates that this low-pressure area will continue to shift southwest along the northern coastal sections of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, further weakening in the next 24 hours.
Local officials are advising residents to stay indoors, refrain from unnecessary travel, and comply with safety protocols. Emergency services remain on standby to address any incidents arising from waterlogging or flooding in sensitive areas.
The relentless rainfall also raises alarms about potential traffic disruptions, power outages, and effects on commerce. Citizens are encouraged to take precautions and stay informed through official weather updates.
Chennai and nearby districts are expected to experience sporadic rainfall in the coming day, with residents monitoring IMD updates for further information.
