Russia carried out drone and missile attacks on Kyiv and several other regions of Ukraine on Saturday, just before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s scheduled meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The talks, to be held in Florida, aim to discuss a possible agreement to end the nearly four-year war that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
Explosions were reported in Kyiv as Ukraine’s air defence units responded. Russian drones and missiles targeted the capital, as well as northeastern and southern regions. An air raid alert remained in effect for several hours, though there were no immediate reports of damage or power outages.
Territorial control continues to be the main obstacle in peace negotiations. Zelenskiy said a 20-point peace plan, supported by the U.S., is almost complete. The plan includes security guarantees from the United States, a key measure after earlier agreements in the region failed to prevent further Russian aggression. Zelenskiy expressed hope that major decisions could be made before the New Year.
Trump said the United States is leading the peace efforts. He expects productive talks with Zelenskiy and indicated he hopes to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon. Kyiv is pushing for long-term, legally binding security guarantees, while the U.S. has proposed a 15-year renewable deal.
Other critical points include control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, currently occupied by Russian forces, and the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow demands that Ukraine withdraw from parts of Donetsk, while Kyiv wants fighting to stop along current frontlines. A U.S. proposal suggests creating a free economic zone if Ukraine leaves certain areas, though details are still being worked out.
Zelenskiy also mentioned that if the U.S. does not fully support Ukraine’s position on territory, the 20-point plan could go to a public referendum, provided Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire to allow preparations for voting.
Russian officials acknowledged differences with Ukraine’s version of the peace plan but expressed cautious optimism. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov called the talks a “turning point,” while Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed discussions with U.S. officials over the proposals.
The attacks highlight the urgency of the peace process. As diplomacy continues, Ukrainians remain under threat from ongoing missile and drone strikes. The upcoming Zelenskiy-Trump meeting is seen as a critical step that could influence the path toward peace and stability in the region.
