Rovman Powell Shines as Dubai Capitals Defeat Abu Dhabi Knight Riders

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dubai, Dec 8 – In an electrifying performance, West Indies star Rovman Powell delivered an unbeaten 96, steering the Dubai Capitals to an impressive 83-run triumph against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the opening match of ILT20 Season 4.

Although the Capitals faced early trouble with openers Toby Albert (8) and Sediqullah Atal (8) dismissed quickly, Powell found a reliable partner in Jordan Cox. Cox contributed a brisk 52 off 32 balls, forming a vital 119-run partnership that reversed the initial setbacks, helping the Capitals post a strong total of 186/4 in 20 overs. Powell’s innings featured eight boundaries and four sixes, complemented by Cox's four fours and a six.

The Knight Riders encountered difficulties right from the start, as David Willey dismissed Alex Hales for a duck alongside Alishan Sharafu for just 4 runs in the first over. Mustafizur Rahman quickly followed up to reduce the opposition to 10/3 by taking out Unmukt Chand. Although Phil Salt’s 27 off 21 balls provided a momentary reprieve, the Knight Riders ultimately fell short, bowled out for 103 in just 15.3 overs. Waqar Salamkheil and Mohammed Nabi were instrumental, claiming four wickets collectively and consistently pressuring the batting side.

Despite a brief surge from Andre Russell (12 off six balls), the middle and lower order of the Knight Riders faltered, with captain Jason Holder (0), Sunil Narine (3), and Sherfane Rutherford (19) failing to mount any effective resistance, leaving them considerably short of the target.

The Capitals' significant victory not only marked their first win of the season but also underscored Powell’s ability to turn games around and the team's resilience in the face of early challenges.

Brief Scores:
Dubai Capitals: 186/4 in 20 overs (Rovman Powell 96*, Jordan Cox 52; Jason Holder 2/30)
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders: 103 in 15.3 overs (Phil Salt 27; Waqar Salamkheil 4/29, David Willey 2/13, Mohammed Nabi 2/12)
