The ROKS Dosan Ahn Changho, a South Korean submarine, has successfully arrived at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in British Columbia after an unprecedented journey across the Pacific, marking a significant milestone for South Korea's naval capabilities. This event is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first successful trans-Pacific transit by a South Korean submarine, covering over 14,000 kilometers. The arrival coincides with critical evaluations of Canada’s naval defense strategy, drawing considerable international attention.

Accompanying the submarine was the South Korean frigate ROKS Daejeon, which left its home country in March. During the extensive voyage, these vessels made stops in Guam and Hawaii before arriving in Canada. Military representatives termed this mission as one of the most pivotal operations executed by the Republic of Korea Navy, showcasing the submarine’s long-range operational capabilities and sophisticated underwater endurance systems.

Part of the KSS-III submarine program, the Dosan Ahn Changho stands out as South Korea’s inaugural domestically designed large submarine class. It features innovative lithium-ion battery technology and an air-independent propulsion system, enabling prolonged underwater operations. Experts commend these attributes for enhancing the submarine's efficacy in long-distance missions and modern naval combat scenarios.

The submarine's timely arrival holds particular relevance as Canada is in the process of assessing replacements for its aging Victoria-class fleet. The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project aims to procure up to 12 new submarines, a substantial investment projected to cost billions over several decades. Hanwha Ocean, a South Korean defense firm, is a key contender, proposing the KSS-III design to the Royal Canadian Navy.

Military analysts suggest that the Pacific crossing may also serve as a strategic demonstration, establishing the submarine’s reliability and operational range to Canadian defense officials. Canada’s requirements for submarines include extensive operational capabilities across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic regions. The successful voyage underscored the submarine’s potential to fulfill Canada’s stringent naval needs.

It has been reported that Royal Canadian Navy personnel participated in part of the Pacific journey alongside the South Korean crew as part of a military exchange initiative. This collaboration provided Canadian operatives with a unique opportunity to observe the submarine's systems and operations in real-time conditions. Defense observers posit that this type of partnership could enhance military relations between Canada and South Korea moving forward.

Upon its arrival at CFB Esquimalt, the submarine is slated to engage in joint naval drills with the Royal Canadian Navy before proceeding to the multinational RIMPAC 2026 military exercise in the Pacific. Additionally, South Korea is planning to deploy further advanced naval units to this exercise, highlighting its increasing involvement in global maritime security efforts.

The visit has sparked notable interest among defense specialists, given that Canada’s decision on submarine replacements is considered a crucial aspect of its military procurement agenda in recent years. Alongside South Korea's proposal, Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is also vying for the contract. Experts believe that the outcome may shape Canada’s naval tactics for future decades and significantly influence international defense alliances within the Indo-Pacific region.
